Isn't it good to practice memorizing math facts?
NO! Turns out that the old idea of just 'memorizing' math means you simply have a good memory, NOT that you are actually good in math. Don't we want our kids to actually be GOOD IN MATH?
Isn't it good to use math apps for screen time?
Well, is that the ONLY way you have them practice math at home? What about learning strategy and taking turns in games? Does your child know how to change their strategy if they start losing? These are actually IMPORTANT math reasoning skills that do NOT happen on apps.
Isn't the teacher doing stuff like this at school?
The teacher doesn't have the time! They have time for quick math facts, but NOT for games that involve lots of taking turns and strategy.
What if I am not good in math myself?
When you play a game together, you are all playing (and learning) together! Don't worry about knowing all the answers, just play and connect with your child.
What if my child has math anxiety?
You are playing a GAME! Just call it a dice game. This isn't homework, or for a grade. Just fun at the kitchen table with your child. Being able to relax and have fun is the perfect solution to math anxiety!
